Magic is Real

Welcome to Thaumaturgy, a modern fantasy tabletop RPG where you’ll play as a spellcaster on a quest for power and ascension in defiance of fate. In a world where your choices are limited by fate, the only way to make your own path is through the casting of arcane spells. As a spellcaster, you’ll split your time between education in the academy and questing in the three contrasting realms. You’ll cast powerful spells, perform rituals, and engage in arcane duels. Whether you’re discovering the wonders of magic or confronting the dangers lurking in the shadows, the choices you make will determine your fate. Are you willing to defy the strings of fate, overcome the schemes of dangerous patrons, and cast maledictions in pursuit of Ascension?

The Fool from the major Arcana. A young fool wanders though a field towards a precipice. On the end of a stick over their shoulder they carry everything that the world has given them with no regard for its weight. Their only other possession is a flower in full bloom and their only friend a small dog.

Features

  1. Change Your Fate: Your Gamemaster or Fatekeeper will drive much of the narrative in Thaumaturgy. You’ll have options, but to make true choices, you’ll need to cast a spell. Spellcasting lets you alter the narrative, which is why it is the only time you’ll roll dice.
  2. Magic Circle: When you cast spells, you roll opposing dice pools into a magic circle. While it is your successes and failures that determine the outcome, the location that each die lands in the magic circle causes ripples that alter the world.
  3. Thaumaturgic Tarot: Learn the true nature of the Tarot — the story of the Witch and their ascension. As the Fatekeeper, you’ll use the ripples of every casting to read the fate of the coven using the Tarot.
  4. Arcane Academy: In the first phase of the game, you will study the arcane arts and research lost secrets in the Academy. The Academy is an ancient community of spellcasters that facilitates magical education and the pursuit of ascension.
  5. Questing: In the second phase, you’ll explore the wonders of three realms and face the dangers in the shadows as you complete quests. Quests will provide you with what you need to complete the ascension ceremony and move to the next level.
  6. Rituals: When you cast spells, you’ll manifest its specific magical effect. While you’ll adapt each to your intentions, cooperative magic enables greater power. Rituals are cooperative castings that empower your coven to pursue greater intentions and manifest world-changing magical effects.
  7. Arcane Duels: While mundane violence is inconsequential to spellcasters, you’ll face dangerous and powerful foes in arcane duels. Fight arcane duels using esoteric tactics while wielding wands or other dueling foci.

Playtesting

The alpha playtesting phase for Thaumaturgy is currently underway, and we are working tirelessly to fine-tune Act 1 for optimal intuitiveness and engagement. Our main focus at the moment is perfecting the Awakening session, where you will create your character, learn the art of spellcasting, and embark on your journey at the Academy. This is also the session that you are likely to play at a convention.
